What Happened
David Maiman, 44, of Middle Island, was killed Wednesday afternoon after his 2020 Lexus crossed into oncoming traffic on Rocky Point Yaphank Road and struck a 2020 Jeep head-on, Suffolk County Police said. The collision happened at approximately 1:30 p.m. on September 9, 2026, according to Patch.
Maiman was driving the Lexus northbound on Rocky Point Yaphank Road when the vehicle veered into the southbound lane, hitting the front driver’s side of the Jeep, police said. The Jeep’s driver, a 45-year-old man from Port Jefferson, was also taken to Stony Brook University Hospital. His injuries were described as minor, per Patch.
Maiman was pronounced dead at Stony Brook University Hospital, police confirmed. Both vehicles were impounded for a safety check following the collision.
Officers closed Rocky Point Yaphank Road between Industrial Way and Whiskey Road at around 1:40 p.m., roughly ten minutes after the crash was reported, Suffolk police told Patch. The closure remained in place pending the investigation.

Detectives from the Suffolk County Police Department’s 7th Squad, headquartered in Shirley, are investigating the crash. No charges had been announced as of the 7:20 p.m. update from Patch. Both vehicles were impounded for a safety inspection, which is standard procedure in fatal crashes pending a mechanical and forensic review.
