What Happened
Two men were killed in a wrong-way head-on collision on Interstate 95 north of State Road 200 in Nassau County, Florida, at approximately 4:30 a.m. on Saturday, July 11, 2026, according to the Florida Highway Patrol. Action News Jax first reported the fatal crash, which involved three vehicles and left debris — including a dislodged engine block — scattered across multiple travel lanes.
The wrong-way driver, a 39-year-old Jacksonville man, entered the southbound lanes of I-95 while traveling north, troopers said. He was in the inside left lane when his sedan struck head-on an SUV driven by a 49-year-old man from Kingsland, Georgia, who was traveling legitimately southbound in the same lane. The force of the collision sent the SUV veering sharply to the right; it overturned and came to rest on the outer shoulder of the highway, per FHP.
A third vehicle — a sedan driven by a 26-year-old St. Augustine man — was traveling southbound behind the SUV when the crash occurred. The St. Augustine driver swerved into the center lane to avoid the wrong-way vehicle. In doing so, his sedan struck debris that had been thrown from the SUV, including an engine block. His sedan ultimately stopped in the inside lane and shoulder, facing south. The Florida Highway Patrol did not report any injuries to the third driver.
The wrong-way sedan came to rest across the center and inside lanes. The Jacksonville man behind the wheel was pronounced dead at the scene. The 49-year-old Kingsland, Georgia, SUV driver was transported from the crash site and was later pronounced dead at UF Health Jacksonville, according to Action News Jax.
FHP has not released the names of any of the three drivers involved. No cause for the wrong-way entry has been publicly identified by investigators at this time. No charges have been reported.
